Jose Velasco, M.D.

Clinical Associate Professor of Family Medicine - Rogersville, TN

Dr Velasco Dr. Velasco was born December 29, 1960 in Manila, Philippines and  He is the ninth, out of ten children.  He received a BS Physical Therapy in 1981 and a Doctor of Medicine in 1985 from University of Santo Tomas.  After serving his Internship, he came to the United States in May, 1987 with a group of ten physical therapist recruited by a company based in Georgia.  Dr. Velasco was assigned to work in the Kingsport area nursing homes and was the team leader for four additional physical therapists.  He continued to work as a physical therapist until 1990.  During this time he was preparing and taking a series of examination to become eligible for medical residency.  Dr. Velasco was accepted to the residency program at Quillen College of Medicine East Tennessee State University and served his residency at Kingsport Family Practice in 1991.  During his residency, he was Chief Resident in 1993-1994 and was the recipient of the Resident of the Year award.

After completing a Fellowship in Rural Medicine in 1994, he accepted a position with ETSU as an Assistant Professor to become a part of a new rural, community based health professional’s education program.  His classroom was located in Rogersville, Tennessee some 50 miles from ETSU.  The purpose of this program was to provide clinical and community based education experience for nursing, medical and public and allied health students.  In addition to his classroom responsibilities, Dr. Velasco headed up a medical center that offered his students “hands on” experience in rural medicine and delivered quality health care and health education to the residents of Hawkins County. 

Dr. Velasco has served as the Medical Director of the local nursing home for approximately fifteen (15) years improving quality of care and decreasing hospitalizations. Dr. Velasco has served as co-medical director, for management of medical issues, for inpatients in the Welmont Center for Senior Health, a geriatric psychiatric unit. He also served on the Medical Staff Quality Peer Review Committee, Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee and the ER Committee at Welmont Hawkins County Hospital. 

Dr. Velasco is an American Board of Family Practice Diplomate, 1994.  He is certified in ACLS and ATLS.  He is a member of the American Medical Directors Association and is one of forty- three Certified Medical Directors in the state of Tennessee.  He, his wife, Alma and their four children reside in Kingsport, Tennessee.  He recently received the Jan Phillips Mentor Award for mentoring ETSU medical students.
