Admission to Quillen College of Medicine
The following policy is in effect for the 2014 and future entering classes.
Medical education in America is changing at a rapid pace. In concert with the changing environment, the new MCAT was implemented in 2015 and will require significant background in the social and behavioral sciences in addition to the traditional background and building blocks of modern medical science. Our Admissions Committee encourages future applicants to stay abreast of changes which may affect them in their future pursuits and careers. This may be accomplished by staying current on pertinent web based information and by staying in close contact with their advisers, in addition to the medical schools to which they intend to apply.
Applicants are encouraged to pursue their own intellectual interests in completing a broadly based undergraduate education demonstrating scholastic rigor, analytic and critical thinking, an aptitude for understanding complex systems in human biology, and the ability to apply knowledge.
Quillen welcomes applications from excellent students regardless of major or course of study. However, completion of a minimum of 90 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited college or university is required to be eligible for admission. Additionally, all applicants are required to submit scores from the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). MCAT scores from any administration, of the new MCAT exam, within the previous two calendar years are acceptable. Undergraduate GPA, strength of curriculum and scores on the MCAT will continue to be evaluated as important indicators of probable academic success. Competitive performance on the MCAT requires adequate preparation in the behavioral and social sciences, general biology, general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, algebraic and trigonometric quantitative skills, and physical science. Appropriate preparation is strongly advised and will be evaluated in the selection process. The ability to read and comprehend information at a rapid pace is of great value.
Effective with the application cycle for the 2017 entering class, all applicants progressing to our secondary application stage will be required to take and have their scores reported to us on a designated Situational Judgment Test (SJT). Continuing to pursue our mission in primary care and people oriented medicine, we have long sought another tool which could help us identify and select "the best applicants" for our school. After considerable thought, our admissions committee has decided to go with CASPer. Specific information about registering for CASPer is included at www.takecasper.com. Applicants should demonstrate scientific curiosity and enthusiasm for life-long learning. The continuum of scientific discovery that impacts diagnostic and therapeutic practice requires that applicants have an adequate preparation in the pre-clinical sciences, particularly in biochemistry, bio-molecular mechanisms and genetics. In addition, the Admissions Committee looks for a broad educational foundation in the behavioral and social sciences, humanities, literature and the fine arts.
The Committee also values extra-curricular experiences that provide insight into altruism, community service, leadership endeavors and activities reflecting an understanding of human behavior, ethics and cultural awareness.
The Admissions Committee will continue to evaluate applicants based on the holistic principle of seeking persons who are well-rounded and give promise of success not only in the curriculum, but to an even greater degree, in the practice of the profession they seek to enter. We place value on demonstrations of academic ability, wise preparation, demonstrated promise of success on required standardized exams, motivation for and understanding of the study and practice of medicine and demonstrations of personal characteristics thought necessary in a "good doctor."
We continue to follow our mission in rural and primary care medicine and encourage applicants to know, through their own devices, the indicators we most value in selecting applicants to fulfill this mission.
The Admissions Committee reserves the absolute right to condition any offer of acceptance as it deems appropriate.
Advanced Placement or CLEP Credit
A student who has been awarded advanced placement credit, CLEP credit, or other nontraditional credit in academic coursework by a regionally accredited college or university will have those credits honored.
Completion of a minimum of 90 semester hours of coursework from a regionally accredited community college, college or university is required for admission.
Officially reported scores on the new MCAT within the previous two calendar years. (We will no longer accept scores from the old MCAT exam, including the one administered in January 2015.)
Officially reported scores from CASPer (SJT). No applicant will progress to the interview stage without these results.
US Citizenship or Permanent Resident visa.
Current AMCAS application submitted by the application deadline.
