Prevention. Surveillance. Population-based.
Epidemiology is the basic science of public health practice. This curriculum instructs students in the professional skills of epidemiology: introductory, intermediate and advanced practices. Much focus is given to population-based methods for our regional research emphasis on the priority health issues facing rural communities, and Appalachia. Field methods for supporting interventions and programs for disease prevention and health promotion are augmented with sound data analysis skills and practical experiences. Much of the Department’s focus is with disease surveillance applications and data-based methods. Graduates are prepared for participating with federal research programs, and employment with regional, state and federal agencies. This rapidly growing portion of public health practice (epidemiology) is a prominent component of the School’s public health program of study.
