Health Administration

Management. Planning. Directing.

$2,000,000,000,000 – The United States currently spends nearly $2 TRILLION on health care, approximately 16% of the Gross Domestic Product for the nation. In 2004, health care expenses equaled $6,280.00 for every man, woman, and child. By 2015, total health care expenditures are expected to double to a whopping $4 Trillion. Health Care Administrators are responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering health care services while managing resources (personnel, budget, supplies, etc.) in an efficient and effective manner.

Although health care organizations are businesses and function using business principles, they operate in a unique environment. Some of the challenges of managing in this environment are decreasing reimbursements, increasing costs, heavy government regulation, access limits, and an emphasis on quality. Health Care Administrators work at hospitals, health departments, nursing homes, medical practices, outpatient clinics, health maintenance organizations, and other health care facilities.
