The student will perform an Extra and Intraoral Examination on all patients utilizing the light, mouth mirror, probe, tongue depressor, air syringe and gauze according to the following criteria:
- Perform a thorough extra and intraoral exam on every patient at each visit (first appointment, re-appointment(s), and recall).
- Records findings at the first appointment, accurately record the condition of all structures, lesions, and anomalies and record on the oral exam sheet.
- Indicate in writing that all the necessary structures have been examined.
- When describing lesions, note the size (measure with a probe), color, location, consistency, duration and pain association.
- Consult Instructor/Dentist:
- Upon completion of the extra and intraoral examination, the student will assume the responsibility of consultation and follow-up.
- Check with the supervising dentist concerning any suspicious oral lesion. His/her observation should be noted on the treatment record. (Do not disclose prior to consult.)
- Make and follow through on appropriate referrals, if immediate referral is necessary.
- Inform the patient of any abnormal condition, even when it has been determined by the supervising dentist and/or instructor that the lesion does not require immediate referral. Tell the patient to consult a dentist/physician if the condition has not disappeared in two weeks.
- When the supervising dentist refers a patient, the student should be sure the dentist documents this referral and signs the record.
- Re-check at subsequent visits.
- Perform an extra and intraoral exam at all re-appointment and recall visits and record any new findings and date on the oral exam form.
