Early Signs of Autism

Your child may only exhibit a FEW of the following characteristics:

Speech and Language Delay

  • No babbling by 12 months
  • No 2-word spontaneous sentences by 24 months
  • ANY loss of ANY language, babbling, or social skills at ANY age
  • Does not respond to his or her name
  • Unable to indicate wants and needs
  • Delayed language development
  • Does not follow directions
  • Can hear at times, but is unable to hear at other times

Social Delays

  • No engagement by 5 months (ex. no big smiles)
  • No 2-way gesturing by 9 months -No pointing or gestures by 12 months
  • May prefer to play alone:
  • Constructive play is stronger than imaginative play                                     
  • Obtains things for himself/herself
  • Is very independent
  • Has poor eye contact -Is in his/her “own world”
  • May seem to tune others out
  • Lack of interest in other children

Behavioral Concerns

  • Throws tantrums
  • Displays hyperactive, uncooperative, or oppositional behaviors
  • Plays in a strange way
  • Becomes fixated on things
  • Toe walks
  • Has unusual attachments to toys or objects
  • Arranges objects in a line
  • Is oversensitive or undersensitive to certain textures or sounds
  • Has odd movement patterns

Sensory Issues

  • Dislike of certain sounds, textures and/or tastes
  • Dislike of being touched
  • Very passive or very active behavior
  • Displays nervousness; unaware of various physical stimuli, such as pain
  • Covering ears at loud noises
  • “Blanking out” in active environments
  • Often seems uncomfortable when exposed to extreme temperatures
