JOHNSON CITY Dr. James Curran, who is one of the worlds most influential and respected experts in HIV/AIDS, will present Lessons from the Early Years of the AIDS Epidemic on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 7 p.m.
The event, held in commemoration of World AIDS Day, is sponsored by the College of Public Health, College of Nursing, the Public Health Student Association, and the Global Health Interest Group at East Tennessee State University. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be presented in the Taylor Salon at the Carnegie Hotel.
For 13 years, Curran has served as Dean of Emory Universitys School of Public Health. He was employed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when the AIDS epidemic first appeared and had not yet been given a formal name. As Director of HIV/AIDS, he led numerous AIDS-related efforts for the CDC for over a decade.
He is the author of more than 200 professional articles and currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Population Health and Public Health Practice for the Institute of Medicine.
Dr. Randy Wykoff, ETSU Dean of Public Health, says Currans perspectives on the lessons from the early years of the epidemic have significant relevance both as they relate to the current worldwide pandemic of HIV/AIDS as well as to other emerging infectious diseases, such as SARS and Avian influenza.
