Dr. J. Michael Stoots, assistant
professor in the Department of Public Health, has
been appointed to the role of assistant to the dean
in the College of Public and Allied Health. In
addition to his faculty role in the department, Dr.
Stoots is assuming administrative responsibilities
for special projects as assigned by interim dean,
Dr. Creg Bishop, involving the development of the
new college of public health. Plans for
restructuring the existing College of Public and
Allied Health to form two separate colleges, the
College of Public Health and the College of Health
Professions, are ongoing with implementation
scheduled for Fall 2007.
Dr. Stoots has been with the department of Public
Health for seven years and was recipient of the
2004 College of Public and Allied Health Service
Award in recognition of his outstanding service to
the department, college, university, and university
community. His current academic committee service
includes membership of the department, college
(chair), and university curriculum committees. At
the state level, he serves as chair of the Academic
Affairs Committee for the Tennessee Workforce
Development Consortium. Dr. Stoots is instrumental
in online course design for universities
participating in the statewide consortium and for
programs participating in ETSU’s
interdisciplinary Health Care Management
Certificate program. His community service includes
building partnerships with area wellness centers,
coordinating volunteerism for efforts to assist
victims of natural disaster and abuse, and
organizing awareness campaigns to address health
disparities in the region.
