11/8/2005

Dr. J. Michael Stoots, assistant professor in the Department of Public Health, has been appointed to the role of assistant to the dean in the College of Public and Allied Health. In addition to his faculty role in the department, Dr. Stoots is assuming administrative responsibilities for special projects as assigned by interim dean, Dr. Creg Bishop, involving the development of the new college of public health. Plans for restructuring the existing College of Public and Allied Health to form two separate colleges, the College of Public Health and the College of Health Professions, are ongoing with implementation scheduled for Fall 2007.

Dr. Stoots has been with the department of Public Health for seven years and was recipient of the 2004 College of Public and Allied Health Service Award in recognition of his outstanding service to the department, college, university, and university community. His current academic committee service includes membership of the department, college (chair), and university curriculum committees. At the state level, he serves as chair of the Academic Affairs Committee for the Tennessee Workforce Development Consortium. Dr. Stoots is instrumental in online course design for universities participating in the statewide consortium and for programs participating in ETSU’s interdisciplinary Health Care Management Certificate program. His community service includes building partnerships with area wellness centers, coordinating volunteerism for efforts to assist victims of natural disaster and abuse, and organizing awareness campaigns to address health disparities in the region.
