The East Tennessee State University (ETSU) Doctor of Audiology program is a joint-program between ETSU and the Audiology Department at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Mountain Home. The collaboration between facilities provides extensive educational and clinical opportunities for our doctoral students. The ETSU/VA faculty consists of 12 Ph.D. level, 3 Au.D. level, 2 Masters level audiologists, and several adjunct professors. In addition to the vast clinical possibilites, the curriculum offered at our program prepares students for the educational demands in all areas of Audiology. The Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree has recently been designated as the entry-level degree for the profession of Audiology. The demands for the Au.D. have mirrored the growth of the profession of Audiology. By 2012, the Doctor of Audiology degree will be the entry-level degree for the profession.
The Au.D. is a four-year, post-baccalaureate clinical degree that includes an in-depth, broad-scope educational element. The clinical training is patient-based and includes audiometric evaluations, electrophysiologic testing, pediatrics, geriatrics, special needs audiology, advanced hearing amplification, aural habilitation and rehabilitation, intra-operative monitoring, cerumen management, tinnitus training, vestibular/balance diagnostic and rehabilitative services, as well as other scopes of practice.
