Language Exploration and Play Center (LEAP) now at Nave Center

The ETSU Language Center at Nave is a program for children with autism spectrum disorder and related communication and social pragmatic challenges. The program is available for preschoolers through elementary school. Graduate students in speech language pathology under the supervision of Teresa Boggs and Pepper Basham provide services which include comprehensive assessment and intervention for communication disorders. Children typically receive intervention twice weekly during the fall and spring semester. During the summer semester, group programs are provided that focus on building communication and socials skills in peer interactions.

Recently services have been expanded to include the Language Exploration and Play Center (LEAP).  LEAP is a joint venture with Physical Therapist, Dr. Bob Barnhart.  Dr. Barnhart and doctoral students in the physical therapy program will evaluate developmental skills and collaboratively work with SLP students to provide opportunities to development social, communication and gross motor skills.

Current research focus includes the effect of physical and movement skills on language development and the impact of recreational skills on development and communication.   Further, the benefits of interdisciplinary and collaborative intervention will be examined.
