Dr. Marian Whitson is a native of West Tennessee. She received a B.A. degree in Biology
from Dillard University in New Orleans, LA and a Master's Degree in Zoology with
emphasis in Reproductive Physiology from Tennessee State
University. She holds a Juris Doctorate from Miles Law School in Birmingham, AL and a Doctor of
Philosophy in Criminology from Indiana University of
Pennsylvania.
Dr. Whitson's research focus is in the areas of Social Problems and Religion, Race, Gender and Crime and
Social Problems and Cultural Diversity. She is active in the Academy of Criminal
Justice Sciences, Southern Criminal Justice Association and the
American Society of Criminology. Dr. Whitson has publications in the areas of Sexism, Sexual Harassment and the African American Church.
She has co-authored a book chapter on 19th Century Women and the Criminal Justice System. Dr. Whitson is currently developing an
anthology on African American Women of the 19th Century and the Criminal Justice
System. She teaches Criminal Law, White Collar Crime, Ethics, Race, Gender and
Crime, Family Violence and Women and Crime. She is the advisor of the Criminal
Justice Honor Society, (Alpha Phi
Sigma) and the Graduate Criminal Justice
Society.
