Wimba LiveRoom gives you the ability to gather students and Instructors in a synchronous environment to simulate a real life classroom. Once in LiveRoom you can enter a virtual room to communicate with others, conduct presentations, upload, share, and annotate files, create drawings and equations, and even browse the Web as a group.
Wimba LiveRoom and D2L
Wimba LiveRoom is fully integrated into the D2L Learning Environment. This allows for a seamless movement between the D2L Classroom and the LiveRoom session.
Wimba LiveRoom Requirements
Wimba LiveRoom uses the Java Runtime Environment. If you do not have Java installed on your computer please go to http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp and download the latest Java release.
Rooms
In LiveRoom there are two types of rooms that can be created:
General: Created in order to incorporate live sessions in the teaching of the course.
Personal: Private rooms that can be used as a collaborative meeting place, research group, or a gathering place for student activities.
Creating Rooms
Rooms are created by using the Room List Page. This page
allows you to create rooms, join rooms, and maintain rooms.
You can also access the room archives from this page.
To create a new LiveRoom click the New button at the top of the
page. You will then need to enter the following information:
Edit – Click here to edit any of the original creation
settings
Members – Click here to give access to only certain members
of the class
Archive – Click here to access the archive of all the
LiveRoom sessions
Using LiveRoom
When you click to enter the room the LiveRoom application will be launched. You will see a screen like below:
The Room Member List displays all the users currently inside the
room. From this view you can see when participants raise
their hands, ask questions, leave feedback, or request
resources. Here are some of the indicators you could see:
The Status Bar displays information about room members and
contains useful controls.
Chat Window
The Chat Window is where the session’s conversation will take place. Messages typed by the room members will appear here along with your own messages. The members name will also appear next to their name. The Room Moderator’s name will be bolded so the students can tell the difference in messages.
You also have the following controls when using the Chat Room. You can change the font, bold, italic, change the color of your font, underline, and highlight.
Presentation Explorer
The Presentation Explorer shows a list of all the resources that have been added to the LiveRoom session. You will use this area to add and remove resources, change their position in the list, and hide and unhide specific resources. Here are some of the icons you might see in use:
The Resource Viewer is where resources are displayed and controlled. Different resources will have different tools depending on the use. In some cases these special toolbars will appear beneath the standard toolbar. From the Resource Viewer toolbar you can switch between resources, activate a resource, annotate a resource, and download an image of the currently displayed resource.
