Sculpture Courses Undergraduate Courses: 3D Design, ARTA 1140- Prerequisite for all sculpture classes; the fundamentals of 3 dimensional design. Intro to Sculpture, ARTA 2501- Prerequisite for upper level sculpture classes. An introduction to the history of sculpture, as well as basic projects using a wide variety of tools and materials, including modeling with clay, modeling from life, basic construction and wood working methods, building armatures, basic welding and metal techniques, carving stone, and lost wax casting. Intended to be a sampler of possibilities for further sculptural investigation. Intermediate Sculpture, ARTA 3501, repeatable- Further investigations in sculpture, with increased attention on conceptual issues. Students develop technical skills and are expected to do research on various artists and relevant ideas; assigned projects may include carving with pneumatic hammers, or creating outdoor sculpture. Students design some projects on their own. Advanced Sculpture, ARTA 4501, repeatable- Further investigations in sculpture, with higher expectations for ambitious and technically resolved work. Students are expected to be self motivated, developing some of their own projects. Expectations for improved technical skills and conceptual understanding. Independent Study, ARTA 4901-009, repeatable- prerequisite: ARTA 2501. Students who have permission of instructor may develop their own course of study for a semester. Students meet regularly with their instructor, and are expected to demonstrate commitment to the development of an idea, with resulting research in the form of sculpture. Special Topics, ARTA 4957-5957- We offer special topics classes frequently; these are courses which may have a specific conceptual focus, or may provide concentrated guidance in a particular technique. Special topics in Sculpture have included: Stone Carving, Bronze Casting, Contemporary Approaches to Figurative Sculpture, Community Arts Projects, Installation and Environmental Art. Our hope is to develop these courses as regular offerings in our curriculum.
