Facilities/Equipment

The Sculpture area at the Art Annex at ETSU has a large “mixed media” studio, with areas for basic woodworking, work with clay and mixed media, and a wax area.  There is a separate room with a section for mixing plaster and concrete, and a larger area dedicated to working with metal, primarily steel and bronze. There is an outdoor yard which was recently paved and covered, expanding viable work space by several hundred square feet.  The yard houses a small Speedy-melt  foundry and burnout kiln, a gas forge, and a traditional coal forge, as well as space for carving stone and wood, and for construction in general.

The sculpture area is equipped with basic manual, electric, and pneumatic hand tools, which may be used with wood, metal, and stone.  These tools include Cuturi air hammers, manual carving chisels and hammers, power saws, grinders and drills, and various pneumatic hand tools.  We have TiG, MiG, and arc welders, a plasma cutter and oxy-acetylene torches.

Graduate students in Sculpture share a studio space with Ceramics grad students; increasingly we are encouraging students to look into alternative studio spaces for themselves, as on campus space is extremely limited.  Faculty are very willing to meet with students in off campus studios, as an increasing number of students are finding this to be the only solution to limited space.
