Goals
for this year:
- Publish
three newsletters.
- Sponsor
two sessions at NADE 2004 in St. Louis.
- Solicit
manuscripts and funding for Best Practices in Developmental
Mathematics, 2nd edition. Publish it, time permitting.
- Continue
to add to the SPIN web site.
- Encourage use of SPIN e-mail discussion
group.
Accomplishments
to date:
- April
and fall newsletters were e-mailed to every member for whom we had an
e-mail address. Newsletters were later posted to the SPIN website.
- Two
sessions sponsored by the MathSPIN were presented at the NADE
conference in Austin.
- Members
are working on two SPIN-sponsored sessions for the 2004 conference in
St. Louis. One will be a roundtable on “what works” and the other will
deal with technology.
- Tom
Armington solicited manuscripts for, edited, and sent the final version
of Best Practices 2nd edition to Prentice Hall for
publishing. Prentice Hall agreed to publish the book for us for free if
they could use extra copies. The NADE board is negotiating a
publication contract with Prentice Hall. SPIN members and non-members
contributed many manuscripts.
- The
SPIN web site has been updated as time permitted. Newsletters,
quarterly reports, presentation handouts and light anecdotes have been
added.
- In all, 87 messages were posted to the
e-mail discussion group in 2003. Some of the topics discussed include
locating information about state developmental math policies,
determining the reading level of a math textbook, attendance policies,
other conferences of interest, and collaboration on research projects.
Perhaps this resource is underutilized, but no one can see the group
messages as unwanted junk mail.
Recommendations
for future action:
We hope that the negotiations between
Prentice Hall and the
NADE board will proceed with reasonable speed so that Best Practices 2 can finally be
published. The original projected publication date was late summer 2003.
Indicate
any specific SPIN issues for which
you would like NADE Board input.
