At the NADE 2002 conference in Orlando, the Math SPIN sponsored a Panel Discussion on the topics of "Placement Practices" and "Tracking Student Progress." The session was attended by 42 people. Evaluations indicated that 83% of those present rated all aspects of the session from good-to-excellent.
The SPIN also conducted its annual meeting in Orlando, with 52 people in attendance. Three SPIN members gave short presentations on a "Calculator Comparison Guide," "Calculator-assisted factoring," and a "Strategy for teaching factoring." The membership voted by a large majority to sponsor two discussion sessions next year. The first will be a follow-up to Dr. Willard Daggett's call to revise the curriculum to reflect current workforce needs rather than traditional academic topics. The second will focus on "Best practices teaching methodologies." SPIN leaders are currently preparing proposals for these two sessions for the NADE2003 conference.
Other activities since December have included the printing and distribution of two newsletters, continued development of the SPIN web site, and invitation of new members to join the SPIN listserv. In May, the SPIN will be putting together a publication entitled "Best Practices in Developmental Mathematics." The SPIN is using its special project funds ($543.92) for this purpose.
