C.O.P.S. .
. . Police on Bicycles!
Since 1998,
ETSU has participated in Community Oriented Policing Services
-- C.O.P.S. -- a relatively new effort in policing that provides
a more direct involvement with the community by having police
officers patrolling campus on bicycles.ETSU decided to bring
bike patrol officers to campus after other schools reported dramatic
drops in crime after implementing the program. The university's
C.O.P.S. program began with the assistance of a Department of
Justice grant, which assisted in covering the cost of the state-of-the-art
mountain bikes, full protective police gear and special training
for the participating officers.According to Jack Cotrel,
director of Public Safety, the C.O.P.S. program has provided
multiple benefits to the campus since its inception.
"It helps the
police to become more intimately familiar with the university
community, so that the community can feel comfortable talking
to police officers," he said. "Our main goal is crime prevention
and student awareness, and this effort provides more visibility
and accessibility to the officers."
