All the sirens attracted quite a crowd. I carefully edged closer to the center of the crowd. It was at this point that I saw a man lying on the ground with paramedics gathered around him. The smell of alcohol emanating from his direction was overwhelming. I started shaking my head and then began to pray for the fellow, since that is what my parents taught me to do in any situation where I find myself in doubt.

I had just finished my prayer when I heard Seth say something about all of the parties that the guy who had apparently just died from alcohol poisoning was going to miss. I was appalled and had a look on my face expressing just that when our eyes met for the third time that day. He had yet another woman on his arm, who he introduced as Lolita and was drinking vehemently from the bottle of rum in his other hand. I wondered how this man could say such a thing at a time when a man had just gone to meet the Lord.

We began talking about ourselves and generally got to know a little about one another. I found out that Seth was a bartender and worked on the side as a tour guide, who would show me the "real" Key West, for a nominal fee, of course. Our conversation was interrupted by a strange looking man, Dr. Von Helsing, if I remember correctly. This man asked Seth if he had seen Nina. Seth said she just left him about a mile or so before he got to the beach saying she had to be somewhere. At which point the woman on his arm said, "You said I was the only one!" She then turned and left abruptly. The Dr. took his leave and our conversation resumed.

At sunset, Seth said he had to go to work and I should drop by for a drink later. I politely refused with my general, "I don't drink." Which I don't, unless you count Communion wine. He had already given me enough to chew on and I thought my mind needed time to reflect on all that I had just learned from a man I barely knew. To read about my thoughts click here.
