ROBERT FROST

American Poet, Robert Frost is one of the great poets of the twentieth century. Frost was born in San Francisco in 1874. After finishing high school Frost attended college sporadically while working at various odd jobs and writing poetry. Frost later attended Harvard and then moved to England. Frost found success in England with the publication of his first two volumes of poetry. These two works, a group of lyrics entitled A Boy's Will and North of Boston, brought him immediate recognition. Frost returned to the United States and continued to write poetry with increasing success. Robert Frost would ultimately be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry four times. He was also the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.

The poetry of Robert Frost operates on many levels. The levels of his poetry give it elusiveness, which is its most important characteristic. These levels give many readers, myself included, the ability to find their own beliefs reflected in the poetry of Robert Frost.

Frost's poem, "Fire and Ice" is one of my favorites. It does not deal with the destruction of the Earth but is concerned with humans not allowing themselves to stoop to hate.

FIRE AND ICE

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
