The English Department at East State Tennessee State University offers an Honors Program to challenge the most diligent student.
Consisting of 18 hours of honors courses, the program offers writing-intensive classes plus an honors thesis.
Admissions
Students may enter the Honors Program with a high school GPA of 3.2 and one of the following: an ACT of 25, an SAT of 1180, or an
AP score of 4 in English. Transfers and students already enrolled must meet slightly different criteria. A student must enter no later than the sophomore year.
General Education Courses
The English Department offers several Honors courses that can be taken for the general education core required of all students. ENGL 1018 and 1028 meet the WRITTEN COMPOSITION requirement while ENGL 2138, 2238, 2338, and 2438 meet the required LITERATURE category. In order to enroll in these courses, students must meet the standards of the English Honors Program.
The Honors Curriculum
The English Honors Program consists of one three-hour course in each of the following:
composition,
literature survey,
literature focus,
a special topic,
Shakespeare, and
the thesis.
Survey courses are offered in American literature, British literature, European literature, and world literature. This year the focus course is a study of Kenyan women writers, while the special topic course features the politics of authorship.
The English Honors Program can become part of an English major or minor. All honors courses earn transcript recognition.
Students enrolled in the English Department Honors Program may qualify for out-of-state tuition scholarships. In addition, scholarships are available for a few in-state students.
