Mockingbird FAQs

The literary deadline for consideration for The Mockingbird 2009 is 10/31/2008. Do not use this form for art submissions; this site will post more information about art submissions as it becomes available.

Eligibility:

The Mockingbird is East Tennessee State University’s own award-winning literary/art publication. All currently enrolled ETSU students are eligible to submit to The Mockingbird.

Entry Requirements and Format:

All written work must be typed but available in electronic form if requested. There is no fee for entry. Students may enter works in as many categories as they wish, but they must not submit more than the permitted number per genre. The Mockingbird practices blind submission. Each work must be accompanied by a cover sheet that includes your name, your student number, your mailing address, your telephone number, and your e-mail address. Do not place your name on the submission itself; print your student number on the upper right-hand margin of each page.

Poetry: Students may submit up to three poems per academic year. Individual poems should not exceed five (5) double-spaced pages in length.

Fiction: Students may submit up to two pieces of fiction per academic year. These may be short stories or self-contained scenes from longer works. Fiction submissions should not exceed twenty (20) double-spaced pages.

Non-Fiction Prose: Students may submit up to two pieces of non-fiction prose (essays, interviews, and/or editorials) per academic year. These pieces may be self-contained portions of longer works. Non-fiction prose submissions should not exceed twenty (20) double-spaced pages.

Drama: Students may submit up to two pieces of drama. These may be short pieces or self-contained scenes from longer works. Drama submissions should not exceed twenty-five (25) double-spaced pages.

Authors must title their own works (we will not accept untitled entries). List each submission on the completed submission form. Include two (2) copies of each submission with this form. We will not consider submissions that do not follow the submission guidelines. Entry deadline in 10/31/2008.

Winners:

The Mockingbird will announce winners during the spring 2009 semester and will award cash prizes for the top three (3) works in each category. The magazine may publish other works of merit as space permits. The editorial staff reserves the right to eliminate any categories for which it receives insufficient or unacceptable material.

Where to Submit:

Deliver your literary works Adam Pacton in The Mockingbird office (101 Burleson Hall) or submit them via the ETSU English Department. We do not accept electronic submissions, although we will request electronic versions of submissions once we have determined contest winners. Please look for announcements for the art competition during the spring semester.

Residual Rights:

The Mockingbird reserves the following rights pertaining to publishing material: (i) aside from print publication, Mockingbird reserves the rights to publish representational segments of all written work on our website www.etsu.edu/english/mockingbird, (ii) Mockingbird reserves the rights to republish material in future anthologies, collections or solicitations and (iii) Mockingbird returns other publishing rights to the creators with the stipulations that subsequent publications will note that Mockingbird has been the first publisher of the material.
