Don walked back down the gravel drive toward the main road. He felt like he should
have been disappointed, but something inside told him that his visit with the witch,Raine, had
not been a wasted trip. He felt that he had taken an important step towards finding the spirit
guide, but he didn't know why he felt that way. Call it intuition.
Don stopped at a small stream, halfway down the drive and thought about what Raine had
told him. "Follow the path that's clear." Don wondered what she meant. How could he follow
the path that's clear, when he had no idea where that path was? He decided to try water gazing.
He had read somewhere that Indians found answers to difficult questions in life by gazing at
water. The trick was to focus entirely on the water and block everything else out of your mind.
Don had tried the method several times but all he ever saw was the clear running water. No
answers appeared. Still, he meant to try every way he could think of to find his path in life. It
meant that much to him, so he sat and gazed at the stream. After a while, Don was distracted by
the shadows moving in. A storm was forming overhead. He decided that he'd better put the
water gazing on hold and try to hitch a ride back to Seattle, before the rains came. His gazing
had shown him nothing but the clear running water.
After Don reached the main road, it didn't take him long to flag down a ride. The young
man behind the wheel introduced himself as Sedrick. Making small talk, Sedrick asked Don
what he was doing hitchhiking in the Washington woods. Don explained his quest to Sedrick.
Sedrick said "perhaps God is the spirit you're looking for?"
"I'm sure of it." Don answered. "But my God exists, as a spirit, in everything in nature. My
God is the God that the Indians know. I've met him once, and now I need to find him
again."
"Well, I wish you luck."
They rode the rest of the way to Seattle in silence. Sedrick let Don off at the "Y" and
refused Don's offer of payment for the ride. "No problem," he told Don. "I was going this way
anyway."
Don went up to his room and took a shower. He decided that he would forget his quest for a
night, and explore Seattle's night life. It would be a memorable excursion."
