Project 2 or the Digital Muse Project gives all of you the chance to pursue your literary interests in creating THREE HTML FILES: (1) a transcribed text with complete bibliographical and transcription information; (2) your own brief introduction to the author and text, with graphics and further bibliographical citations, as needed; and (3) a page of links to related sites. These are the requirements of the project:

On Friday, November 4, you will have turned in the following:

• You will have FTP'd your three files to your server folder and have checked all links to make sure your pages work. Remember to continually backup your project so you won't lose it during the last week.

• A transcription of a literary text: choose a short poem or a very short story that is out of copyright. The longer your text, the more transcription errors will probably occur, and the more points I will have to deduct. Also provide a paper copy of the text so I can check the accuracy of the transcription. Use a text printed in 1925 or before in order to avoid copyright difficulties.

• A header before your text that gives full bibliographical and encoding information about your text.

• All three of your page will begin in the same way and will use the same text and background colors. Start like this:

  Download the "banner.gif" file from the MUSE folder--it will head all of your pages.

• The introduction to the text and author should be at least 500 words and provide helpful contexts and information to help the reader interpret the text that you have transcribed. If you use sources, cite them on this page.

• Your introduction to the text and author will include at least two large JPG graphics, aligned on your page as you wish. You can scan your own artwork or photographs. If you scan the artwork or photographs of someone else, be sure that you have permission. Or you can scan illustrations from books printed in 1922 and before, using the lab scanner.

• Your links page will include at least four WORKING links to related websites. These will be done in an image map, produced with Photoshop. You probably will wish to display the links in a conventional list, as well as on the image map. See the main Muse page for an example.
  

• Use an html table to format your text transcription. Also, be sure include a return link to the Digital Muse home on every one of your pages.
  

• To turn in this assignment, you will upload your files using FTP, and then hand in to me the paper copy of the poem with your name on it, along with the URL of your TEXT transcription. I will need the URLs to add links for the 2000 texts.
