When Savvy returned to her office at three, she found a nasty surprise waiting for her. It turned out that Jarrod Williamson had decided to sue her! Apparently, after the Boy Wonder had finished talking to Porky the Policeman, he had had his lawyer rush down to the courthouse and start legal proceedings. Due to Jarrod's celebrity status, the court date had been set for the week after next.
Savvy was mortified. She couldn't possibly prepare an adequate defense in two weeks. So, Savvy called her lawyer. He assured her that everything would be okay and that they would sue the pant off Jarrod Williamson. After she hung up the phone, Savvy massaged her aching temples.
"I've got so much stuff to do," she thought wearily. "Sometimes I wish that I was by myself in the middle of nowhere. No phones, no TV, no car. Nothing to disturb me."
"Maybe I should try to find myself' like Keri says that rich ex-showgirl is doing," Savvy thought.
Keri had been Savvy's best friend since grade school and she now ran a small bookstore in downtown Knoxville. Over the last several weeks, Keri had been telling Savvy about this rich ex-showgirl that had been buying a lot of religious and philosophical books in order to find herself'.
Savvy pushed these silly thoughts away and looked at her schedule for the rest of the day. Thanks to the accident, most of her morning meetings had been rescheduled for that afternoon. She was supposed to meet with the usual assortment of people: the Director of Public Relations, a top executive from the perfume company, and so on. Savvy sighed to herself and got to work.
Savvy didn't get finished until 11:30 p.m. As she walked through the zoo, it began to rain. As she darted from building to building seeking shelter, she thought, "It's just my luck. Why do these things always happen to me?"
Just as she was walking past the timber wolf enclosure, Savvy felt a sharp tingle and was blinded by a brilliant flash of white light. Her hair stood on end and she shivered from head to toe.
"What . . .what was I doing?" she thought.
Savvy teetered precariously in her high heels before wandering over to a nearby bench. She sat down and stared into the wolf enclosure. Savvy looked dazed and bewildered and she kept turning her head from side to side as if trying to hear some whispered voice.
As she sat on the hard, cold, wooden bench, Savvy's life flashed before her eyes. She saw clearly for the first time, how empty her life was.
"All I do is plan," she mused. "I plan what to wear, what to eat, what to do at work. Deadlines. So many deadlines, not enough time, never enough time, pace, pace, pace . . ." Savvy's thoughts began to drift.
The rain gradually tapered off and the moon emerged from behind the thick clouds. Then suddenly right in front of Savvy, the wolves began howling.
"Aaauuuooo, aaauuuooo, aaauuuooo . . ." the wolves chorused.
"Aaauuuooo, aaauuuooo, aaauuuooo . . ." Savvy thought.
Savvy smiled and looked up at the moon. Then, she started to howl.
