General Information Sheet: Minor in Technical Writing

For more information, contact Dr. Darryl E. Haley, director of the minor, at haleyd@etsu.edu.

The goal of this minor is to offer individuals a series of courses that are well grounded in the theories and practices of technical and professional writing. Students may use this knowledge base to gain entry-level positions as technical writers – a lucrative field, in this area and nationally. The minor requires 24 credit hours in English (excluding ENGL1010 and ENGL1020, Freshman Composition I and II); 18 of those hours must be above the 2000 level and nine hours must be at the 4000 level. Additional information is listed on the department's checklist for English majors.

Course options included in the minor include:

·        ENGL3130: Advanced Composition

·        ENGL3134: Computers, Writing, and Literature

·        ENGL4057: Writing, Theory and Practice

·        ENGL4100: Writing in the Professions

·        ENGL4935: Technical Writing

·        ENGL4957: Topics in English -- Technical Writing #1

·        ENGL4957: Topics in English -- Technical Writing #2

The two “Topics in English” courses will change to accommodate a variety of writing in the field; these topics may include Grant Writing, Advanced Proposal Writing, Writing for Business and Government, and Advanced Expository Writing.

The Minor in Technical Writing is designed to appeal to both traditional students and professionals seeking career development skills. Traditional students may progress through the courses as part of their overall undergraduate degree programs. Professionals who are not traditional students may choose to enroll in these courses as part of their career development program. Both groups will receive, upon successful completion of the courses, a Letter of Specialization in Technical Writing from the Department of English.
