State of Franklin Environmental Society endows new scholarship

November 21, 2001

JOHNSON CITY – Members of the State of Franklin Environmental Society recently established a new scholarship endowment in the East Tennessee State University Foundation for students from Washington and Greene counties.

The endowment will provide financial assistance to incoming freshmen and undergraduate students who are pursuing bachelor's degrees in environmental health at ETSU. Scholarships will be awarded by the department of environmental health faculty and may be renewed on an annual basis for recipients. The first scholarship will be awarded for fall semester 2002.

The State of Franklin Environmental Society was incorporated in 1985 by then-Tennessee Secretary of State Gentry Crowell in response to concerns by the residents of the Fall Branch, Haws Crossroads and Bethesda communities regarding the quality of their groundwater. By providing technical and monetary assistance, this not-for-profit citizen action corporation was instrumental in improving and protecting the groundwater in these communities through the establishment of the Clear Creek Watershed District in Haws Crossroads and the Lynch Branch Watershed in southwestern Sullivan County.

“It is the pleasure of the board of directors to participate in the Campaign for ETSU Tomorrow by establishing the State of Franklin Environmental Society Scholarship,” said President Marion Light. “We are confident the College of Public and Allied Health will provide the necessary training and leadership to protect the valuable and pristine groundwater supplies of East Tennessee in the future.”
