Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble to present final concert of fall semester

November 21, 2001

JOHNSON CITY – The East Tennessee State University Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Paul Hinman, ETSU director of bands, will present their final concert of the fall semester on Monday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center's Martha Street Culp Auditorium.

The program features selections of contemporary and standard band music, as well as standard and contemporary jazz and commercial music selections.

The internationally recognized Wind Ensemble will begin by presenting Morton Gould's "American Salute," a selection based on the Civil War tune, "When Johnny Comes Marching Home," that is recognized as one of the standards of the band and orchestral repertoire. The second number, "1st Suite in E-Flat for Military Band," has become recognized as a masterwork for the contemporary wind ensemble. This three-movement suite that includes "Chaconne," "Intermezzo" and "March" was written in 1909 by Gustav Holst and remains one of the most frequently performed works.

The third selection is a transcription taken from the orchestral literature entitled "Ruchert-Leider" by Gustav Mahler. This work for winds and solo voice will feature the performance of Dr. Maryann Kyle, assistant professor of music and voice at ETSU. It will be followed by Clifton Williams' "Festival," a work that had been somewhat unknown, but has received much attention in recent years. The final number, "Lassus Trombone" by Henry Fillmore, features the trombone section and is presented in the style of the classic rags from the early 20th century.

Following the Wind Ensemble performance and a short intermission, the Jazz Ensemble will begin with the Count Basie classic, "Day In, Day Out" by Sammy Nestico. This high-energy work features guest soloist Dr. David Champouillon, ETSU instructor of music, on piano, as well as other solos presented by several members of the band.

The second selection is an original composition that was written for the John Von Ohlen Big Band from Indianapolis, and the third is a "straight ahead" swing tune entitled "Got The Basie Feelin'" by Neal Finn. This number also features solos by Champouillon and several students. The final selection is Cole Porter's "Love For Sale," which will feature freshman trumpeter Jeff Kleiber and the entire saxophone section.

This concert is free and open to the public. For more information or for special assistance or seating for persons with disabilities, call the ETSU band office at (423) 439-6951 or 439-4276.
