British artist Peter Suchin displays paintings, give lectures

JOHNSON CITY – Peter Suchin, a British contemporary artist, will visit East Tennessee State University's Slocumb Galleries in January to display his paintings and give free, public lectures.

His paintings, which are abstract, nonrepresentational images in acrylic on board, will be displayed from Jan. 7-15 in Slocumb Galleries, located in Ball Hall. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Suchin will give a gallery talk during the exhibition's opening reception on Jan. 9 at 4 p.m.

He will also lecture on the “philosophy of art” on Jan. 11 at 11:15 a.m., in Rogers-Stout Hall, room 118, and participate in a public debate on the “state of contemporary British art” with ETSU art and design professor Dr. Scott Kotterbay on Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. in Rogers-Stout Hall, room 127. Suchin will also conduct an interactive symposium on “surviving in the art world” on Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. in Ball Hall, room 127. In addition, Suchin will critique student artwork on an individual basis.

Suchin is currently a freelance contemporary art critic, lecturer and artist. He received his B,A, in fine art in 1982 and his M.A. in art and design in 1990 from Leeds Polytechnic. He has lectured at such schools as Manchester Metropolitan University, University of St. Andrews and York College of Art and Technology. He has contributed to such books as Reading Karl Marx; Animal, Anima, Animus; and The Art Strike Handbook. He has also written articles for Artists Newsletter, Variant and Public Art Journal, and won awards in the U.S and abroad including the Northern Arts Travel Award and the Finnish Ministry of Culture Travel and Subsistence Award.
