ETSU to award Eddie Williams Jr. Scholarship for spring

December 18, 2001

JOHNSON CITY – Students who have a strong interest in rural health issues may apply for the Eddie Williams Jr. Memorial Rural Health Scholarship at East Tennessee State University.

The university will award the $1,000 scholarship to a deserving full-time student in any major who meets the academic guidelines and resides in a 32-county Appalachian region that includes parts of Northeast Tennessee, Southeast Virginia and Western North Carolina.

The scholarship is the result of an endowment established as a memorial to Williams, a founding member of the group that sponsored the Appalachian Health Care Conference series from 1992-98. Williams was the well-known director of the Johnson City-Jonesborough-Washington County Economic Development Board and actively promoted an understanding of the partner relationship between health care and regional economic development.

The application requires a 500-word student essay and letters of endorsement from an ETSU faculty member and from a community leader or health care provider who is aware of the student's interest.

The application deadline is Feb. 1, 2002, and the scholarship award will be made by March 15.
