'Positive/Negative 17' Exhibit includes artists' work from across the United States

JOHNSON CITY – The works of 45 artists from across the United States will be displayed Feb. 4-March 1 at the “Positive/Negative 17,” an annual all-media juried competition sponsored by Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University. Works selected for display include metal arts, photography, prints, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, painting and ceramics.

Marilyn da Silva served as this year's juror and will deliver a free public lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in Ball Hall at 5 p.m., prior to the 6 p.m. opening reception. Da Silva is currently professor and head of the jewelry/metal arts program at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. She also teaches workshops around the country including at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg and the Penland (N.C.) School of Crafts.

The Ohio native has numerous works in more than 60 private collections and in the permanent collections of such museums as the Oakland (Calif.) Museum, the Indiana University Art Museum and the Modern Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea. Her work has been included in publications such as Metalsmith, American Craft and Color on Metal.

Da Silva received her M.F.A. degree in metals from Indiana University and her B.S. in art education from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. In 1999, she was awarded the designation “Master Metalsmith” from the National Ornamental Metals Museum in Memphis.
