JOHNSON CITY – The Council for Advancement and Support of Education is spotlighting the Campaign for ETSU Tomorrow, the capital campaign for East Tennessee State University, by honoring ETSU with the Grand Award in the Graphic Identity Programs category of the District III 2002 Awards Competition. The district includes over 550 colleges and universities throughout the southeastern portion of the United States.
ETSU was the only school picked to receive the Grand Award in this category. Dr. Gene Crume, vice president for institutional advancement from Mars Hill (N.C.) College, was the chief judge of CASE's Total Programs Division. He said this category had the largest number of entries in the entire CASE award's program, and the judges felt the ETSU submission “stood out” from all the rest.
“What struck the judges was the strategic emphasis on using the capital campaign logo throughout the institution's programs,” he said. “Those working in the University Advancement division clearly made the Campaign for ETSU Tomorrow logo a part of ETSU. Also, the style and design was very clean and transferred to several items, making the campaign logo one of the most effective the judges had seen.”
ETSU President Dr. Paul E. Stanton Jr. believes this award is a testimony to the campaign's usefulness and importance in improving the university. “Awards from CASE recognize our professional commitment to institutional advancement, and it is an honor to be recognized by our fellow colleges and universities.”
Leading the Campaign for ETSU Tomorrow is honorary campaign chair retired Congressman James H. Quillen. Campaign co-chairs are Wayne G. Basler, past president and current member of the ETSU Foundation, and Stuart E. Wood Jr., immediate past president of the ETSU Foundation and the first alumnus to lead the Foundation in its history. Local businessman Dennis T. Powell is the current Foundation president, and John A. Jones, editor-in-chief of the Johnson City Press, is president of the ETSU National Alumni Association.
Dr. Richard A. Manahan, vice president for university advancement and executive vice president of the Foundation, commented, “It has taken the entire university community, including the leadership of our campaign chairs, the ETSU Foundation and the National Alumni Association members, working together as a team to make the Campaign for ETSU Tomorrow a truly successful endeavor.”
The campaign graphic, a globe with an explosion of brilliant light, was developed in cooperation with Digital Impact Design of Cornelia, Ga. Working with university personnel, the company has provided assistance with campaign literature and other media using the graphic as the main image for the campaign.
The silent phase of the $100 million five-year campaign began July 1, 1997, and the official closing is set for this June 30.
