Processing eWaste
Did you know that in the next few years, over 250 million computers will become obsolete? This will result in over 3 million tons of what is known as eWaste. eWaste is created when electronic equipment (such as cell phones, iPods, computers, etc) reaches the end of its life-span. Almost every piece of electronic equipment contains hazardous materials that need to be disposed of properly to protect our environment. ETSU’s eWaste event will offer the community an opportunity to safely dispose any electronic waste that may clutter their homes or offices. All equipment will be disassembled and discarded in a way that’s safe for our air and water supplies.
Disposal
Materials will be sealed and secured on trucks and then transported to a recycling center in LaVergne, TN. No materials will be shipped overseas where deplorable working conditions with hazardous chemicals are used to extract metals. Items are run through a mechanical shredder three times, which will guarantee that none of the data on any device is ever recoverable. It is destroyed into confetti-sized pieces, and processed / recycled from there.
