ETSU SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES GUIDELINES FOR THESIS, DISSERTATION, AND CAPSTONE AWARDS

IN ORDER TO:

  1. Recognize outstanding graduate students for their achievements
  2. Increase profile of graduate education at ETSU
  3. Help promote excellence in graduate education

PROPOSAL:

Select (annual basis) recipient(s) for each of the following awards: (up to 5 total awards per year)

  1. Dissertation award: up to 1 per year
  2. Thesis awards: up to 3 total per year
    1. Arts & Humanities; 1 award
    2. Education & Social Sciences; 1 award
    3. Computer Science, Mathematics, Technology & the Sciences; 1 award
  3. Capstone Project (non-thesis culminating project) award: up to 1 per year

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Students must be nominated in writing by an ETSU graduate faculty member.
  2. Thesis or dissertation must be approved by the student’s advisory committee, must have been successfully defended, and must have received final approval from the graduate school.
  3. Capstone/culminating project write-up (non-thesis) must have received final approval from advisor/department and a copy must be submitted with the nomination.
  4. Nominees must be in good academic standing (have a minimum GPA of 3.0) with expected graduation in the current academic year or have graduated within the previous 12 months. Therefore, students graduating May 2007- May 2008 are eligible. Students nominated in a previous year are not eligible for re-nomination.

NOMINATION PROCEDURES:

  1. Student is nominated in writing by an ETSU graduate faculty member using the nomination form and including a letter supporting the nomination.
  2. Attach CV of student (3 pages max). (Note: Theses and dissertations have a CV included, although this is usually very brief. The CV supplied with the nomination can be up to 3 pages in length.)
  3. Send nomination form and attached student CV to the attention of Dr. Wayne Gillespie, Assistant Dean, School of Graduate Studies, ETSU Box 70720, Johnson City, TN 37614.
  4. Nominations are due by March 1, 2008.

EVALUATION OF NOMINEES:

  1. Nominations will be reviewed by committees (1 per award category or sub-category). Each committee will be made up of ETSU graduate faculty members with expertise in the general categories and will be chaired by a member of the ETSU Graduate Council. The dean or assistant dean of the School of Graduate Studies responsible for approval of ETDs will also attend each meeting. Each committee has the right to decline choosing an award recipient for any given year depending upon the quality of the nomination pool. Every effort will be made to choose award recipients before the date of final publication of the graduation program so that a notation can be included in the program. Award recipients will be notified through a letter from the School of Graduate Studies. Copies of the letter will be sent to their nominator, program chair, and departmental chair.
  2. Awards will be given during a presentation venue in the last 2-3 weeks of the spring term (press coverage).

AWARD PRESENTATION/POSTING:

  1. Individual plaques for each award recipient as well as a modest cash award of $100.
  2. One large (multiple name) plaque for each type of award; put names on each year, have on display in grad school lobby.
  3. Newspaper articles – ETSU student paper, ETSU ACCENT, press releases to community papers
  4. Post on grad school web site with titles of (and maybe links to) theses, dissertations, culminating project write-ups, etc.
  5. Make information available to TCGS.
