NMST 5000: Foundations in New Media Studio (3 credits)

This class brings students from very diverse backgrounds together to create a broad base-level understanding of current digital and art topics, tools, trends, and techniques. Students experiment in different areas of digital art disciplines and share experiences and skills across boundaries. Faculty from the Art and Design and Digital Media programs participate to provide a variety of viewpoints.

DIGM 5910: Experimental Media (3 credits)

This class is a digital art and experimental media studio and seminar course designed to support innovative research and production at the graduate level. This course will focus on investigation into new technologies in digital media, with research into current and new technological advances and on the creative application of those technologies. Students must have advanced-level technical skills in their area of interest.

ARTA 5950: Methods of Research (3 credits)

Required of all graduate students in art. Includes the techniques of supporting paper and thesis writing and the preparation of an acceptable prospectus for a proposed thesis or supporting paper. This course is offered once a year.

NMST 5100: Graduate Seminar (1 credit, repeatable up to the required 3 credits)

This class provides the graduate community in digital art the opportunity to discuss and present topics in new media. Instructor- and student-led discussions explore diverse and emerging trends through interactions with different faculty with art and digital backgrounds. This course is repeatable and is required to be completed three times for graduation.

DIGM 5821: Digital Media as an Art Form (4 credits)

This course is an investigation into the historic and current applications of digital media as an art form. By studying the works of 20th and 21st century artists noted for their work in various digital and interactive media, and drawing from aesthetic criteria developed in class, students will produce interactive art projects, and participate in in-depth critical analyses of current digital works.
An applicable Art History Course (3 credits) could be taken instead.

NMST 5950: New Media Studio Capstone (3 credits)

This course is the culminating experience for the M.A. New Media Studio degree. Each student develops and completes a final project with a public presentation of work. Students will work through multiple critiques by different faculty geared toward the preparatation and refinement of the student’s final research and creative work. (Prerequisites: Must be taken in the student’s final semester. Admission only by permit from advisor).

About Guided Electives

Students can take guided electives in other diciplines as appropriate and needed to develop skills for the captstone experience (for example, computer science, music, theater, sciences, entrepreneurial, or other courses).
