The Arkansas Catholic Newspaper
Freelance Writer; Part-Time Graphic Artist
My freelance writing for the weekly Arkansas Catholic included travel to diverse locations
across the state, on paid assignment; I also performed a good deal of "in-house writing"
(when the paper was short-handed--a frequent occurrence--I worked to write and revise copy
with the full-time personnel).
As a graphic artist for this newspaper, I designed advertisements, brochures, and special
events pages; I also assisted with layout of copy and advertising.
I worked in both positions until 1993. |
|
1990 |
August House Books
Freelance Writer; Graphic Artist
In collaboration with faculty in the Department of English at the University of
Arkansas at Little Rock, I worked with August House in development of a book, The

a four-color "coffee-table book" for Serenity Park. |

of Educational Leadership. My job responsibilities included (1) budgeting and purchasing for
two computer labs; (2) building and maintaining two LANs; (3) supervising paid and student
lab assistants; (4) administering computer exams; (5) maintaining an examination and
evaluation program on the LAN server; (6) acting as collaborator and advisor to faculty and
staff in the areas of computer operations, writing, and instructional design; (7)designing

Professional and Personal Development
· HTML and Web Page Design
From 1995 through 1998, for personal enrichment, I engaged in self-study of Hypertext Markup
Language and web page design, teaching myself via the internet and "hard copy" manuals the
basic and advanced levels of HTML.
· Tennessee Williams Web Pages
Beginning in 1997, as an outgrowth of my study of HTML and as a development project in my
doctoral field, I designed and implemented a web site devoted to academic study of
playwright Tennessee Williams. I now receive more than 100 emails each year from scholars
who have examined the site.
· Computer-Assisted Writing Web Pages
Beginning in 1998, as a development project in my secondary doctoral field, technical and collaborative
writing, I designed and implemented web pages (linked to my Williams site) that include
scholarly research, essays, and links relative to technical, expository, and collaborative
writing.
· Genealogy Web Pages
As a personal interest and development project, I began to transfer photographs and other
materials from my 1994 family genealogy to the Internet. This is an ongoing project, and
will eventually include a material family tree that extends back to the 1600s.
·
Online Course Development
In 1999-2001, I began training in
courseware development using HTML, Blackboard, and WebCT course management
software.
· Grant Writing and Funding
In 1999 I began training with professional grant writers, and wrote a
grant to provide a multi-media teaching/training laboratory in the
Department of English
|
|
Johnson City, Tennessee |
| 1999 |
East Tennessee State University
· Director of Computer-Assisted Writing, Department of English
Beginning in 1999, I joined the faculty of ETSU as a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English and
Director of Computer Assisted Writing. My responsibilities include (1) administration of the
department's computer lab and training for lab assistants; (2) designing technology-intensive
courses for the department, and revising existing courses to make them writing- and/or
technology-intensive; (3) acting as liaison to the university's technology offices and
organizations; (4) development of professional development seminars in technology for
faculty, staff, and students; and (5) general faculty teaching obligations, including teaching technical
writing, desktop publishing, academic/professional writing, and literature courses.
· Graphic Design
In 1999-2000, I designed a new recruitment brochure for the ETSU English Department.
· Web Design and Administration
In 1999, I designed and implemented a web site for the ETSU English Department Computer Lab.
In 2000, I became webmaster for the ETSU English Department's web page.
Beginning in Spring 2000 semester, I designed and implemented a web site for my Computers and
Writing Class--this is the first in a series of almost-paperless classes I will design and
teach in the ETSU English Department.
In 2001, I began work with the Assistant Chair for Undergraduate Studies,
Department of English, to offer our Graduate Teaching Practicum as a
web-enhanced course
· Grant Writing
