Practitioners, Health Profession Students and Faculty,
Community Leaders, and those with a specific interest in the
reduction of health disparities.
Why: The conference was designed to be the first
national healthcare conference with emphasis on minority
disparities in health. It has been funded, in part, by
the National Institutes of Health - National Center for
Minority Health & Health Disparities. This is a great
opportunity for us to celebrate and share our
accomplishments with each other.
But Why?

national
concern. The entire conference
focuses on the reduction of health
disparities in Native Americans,
African Americans, Latinos, and all
rural populations.
2.Translational research is recognized as critical to the
reduction of
health disparities. Papers presented
at this conference represent
translational research with the
specified populations.
3. University-community partnerships are an effective
mechanism for
reducing health disparities. This
conference offers a unique
opportunity for researchers and
community members to network.
Conference
Goals:
1. Disseminate the results of translational research aimed to
reduce
health disparities.
2. Highlight effective models for community-university
partnerships to
reduce health disparities.
3. Provide an opportunity for EXPORT Center and other health
disparity
researchers and community members to
network.
About ACTRID
Translational research in the Appalachian Center for Translational Research in Disparities (ACTRID) is defined as systematic translation of basic behavioral theory, methods, and findings into research designed to reduce the burden of health disparities.
Vision: To eliminate health disparities among Appalachians of all racial and ethnic minority groups and among those who are disadvantaged through educational and socioeconomic circumstances.
Mission: To develop and support researchers and community members in a partnership that will produce the knowledge to reduce health disparities in Hispanic, African American, and rural disadvantaged population groups in Appalachia.
How can we help improve the lives and health of Hispanic, African-American and disadvantaged/underserved Appalachian Tennesseans?
We have established the following goals:
· develop and support translational research that addresses precursors and mediators of health disparities in Hispanic, African-American and disadvantaged/underserved Appalachian Tennesseans.
· partner with Hispanic, African-American and disadvantaged/underserved population groups to identify and address unique precursors and mediators of health disparities among Appalachians of racial and/or ethnic minority through health disparities research.
· use the organizational infrastructure and research actions in the ACTRID project as a way to disseminate culturally sensitive health information to target population groups.
· train and mentor health researchers to engage in health disparities research that can be translated into actions that will improve health status.
