Welcome

In 1988, the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, together with the College of Nursing and College of Public and Allied Health, formed the Division of Health Sciences at East Tennessee State University. Today, it stands as the only major academic health sciences center between Nashville and Roanoke.

Our presence as a health sciences division has provided greater opportunities for faculty members and students to serve the health care needs of the region, state, and nation. Educational programs begin at the associate degree level and continue on through the doctoral level and include residency and fellowship training in fields such as cardiology and oncology.

Some of our programs have been consistently ranked among the nation's best in recent issues of U.S.News & World Report. In particular, our rural medicine programs have been listed among the top ten over the past four years.

Educational programs within the Division of Health Sciences lead to degrees in medicine, nursing, physical therapy, environmental health, audiology, radiology, dental hygiene, respiratory therapy, speech-language pathology, public health, medical laboratory technology, and microbiology, plus doctorate degrees in nursing and the biomedical sciences with a doctorate in audiology under development.

Throughout the Division of Health Sciences, much emphasis is placed on the concept of interdisciplinary, community-based learning. For nearly a decade, students and faculty from medicine, nursing, and public health have been working together as a team to help improve the delivery of health care services to residents in rural, underserved regions of Northeast Tennessee. These two programs, the Community Partnerships for Health Professions Education Program and the Graduate Health Professions Education Initiative, were established through major grants from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

In addition, our structure as a comprehensive academic health sciences center has allowed faculty members from all three colleges to collaborate on research investigations and scientific studies. Together, they have brought national recognition to ETSU for their work in cardiovascular research, rural primary care, immunology, oncology, infectious diseases, and geriatrics.

As with any major academic health center, ETSU Physicians and Associates offers a full complement of health care services for patients in and around this region, including general primary care as well as more than 40 specialized services for both adults and children, including kidney and pancreas transplantation, cardiology, cancer treatment, women's health, and cardiovascular surgery. Our research and educational programs allow us to provide state-of-the-art innovative treatment for our patients right in their home communities. "Tomorrow's Health Care Today…Total quality care for you and your family" is our pledge to the patients of ETSU Physicians and Associates.

We invite you to take a closer look at ETSU's Division of Health Sciences and learn more about the James H. Quillen College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Public and Allied Health. Thank you for visiting our web site. Best wishes for wonderful journey!
