Award: Up to $20,000 to undertake
international travel and study in areas of the world covered by
the scholarship.
Eligibility: Applicants must be US
citizens, currently enrolled in an accredited college or
university in the US, and desire to study in a country other
than Australia, Canada, New Zealand or those of Western Europe.
When to Apply: Applications are
usually due in early February.
Funded by the National Security Education
Program, Boren Scholarships are designed to help undergraduates
from the US study in areas of the world (and languages) that are
deemed critical to US national security and yet are
underrepresented in traditional study abroad programs. While the
scholarship does not require any commitment to future
governmental service, candidates need to address in their
applications how they believe their international study plans,
and future academic and career goals, might contribute to US
security interests.
As stated on the NSEP's website, the organization "draws on
a broad definition of national security, recognizing that the
scope of national security has expanded to include not only the
traditional concerns of protecting and promoting American
well-being, but also the challenges of global society, including
sustainable development, environmental degradation, global
disease and hunger, population growth and migration, and
economic competitiveness."
