Award: All tuition and fees and a
yearly stipend of approximately £12,250 per year (renewable),
plus transportation costs to and from the United Kingdom at the
start and conclusion of the program. In addition, recipients
with dependants may apply for further support.
Eligibility: Applicants must be
citizens of a country other than the United Kingdom, have an
excellent academic transcript and a record of sustained
distinguished intellectual and extra-curricular activity, and be
newly admitted to a full-time residential post-graduate degree
program (or secondary Bachelor's) at Cambridge University.
When to Apply:
Applications are usually
due in mid October.
Endowed in 2000 by the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation, The Gates Cambridge Fellowships are quite similar to
Oxford University's Rhodes Fellowships. Each year, approximately
100 new scholarships (of which roughly 40 are designated for
American scholars) are granted to recipients who evidence
excellent intellectual ability, a capacity for leadership, and a
desire to applying their talents and knowledge to contributing
to the betterment of society at large and the lives of others.
During their time at Cambridge University, recipients are
expected to complete a graduate degree (such as a PhD, MPhil,
LLM, MBA, MSc, or MBBChir) or, under certain circumstances, a
second Bachelors degree as an Affiliated Student.
Please note: The Gates Cambridge Fellowship
is meant to provide support for qualified students to study at
Cambridge University, but the Fellowship Trust is not involved
in the University's admittance process. Thus, it is very
important for applicants to apply for admission to Cambridge
through the University's normal channels.
