Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and
Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman
Scholarship is designed to support US students study abroad in
countries other than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or those of
Western Europe. The
Bureau is especially interested in assisting students who have
been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad
(including students with high financial need, diverse ethnic
backgrounds, or disabilities, and those in fields such as
engineering and the sciences). Within six months of returning
from their international studies, recipients are required to
complete a community outreach project that promotes
international education and/or the Gilman International
Scholarship.
