Award: Up to $5000 to go towards tuition, books, room and board, international airfare, and insurance. Recipients who are intending to study languages that the Program designates as "critical" (such as Arabic , Chinese, Indic, Korean, Persian, Russian, and Turkic) may also receive an additional $3000 grant.

Eligibility: Applicants must be US citizens, currently enrolled as an undergraduate at an accredited college or university in the US, and eligible for a Federal Pell Grant. In addition, the study abroad program to which the applicant has applied (or been accepted) must take place in the Fall, Winter, or Spring term (Summer programs are not eligible) and include at least 28 consecutive days in one country.

When to Apply:  Applications are usually due in early October and April each year.

Sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship is designed to support US students study abroad in countries other than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or those of Western Europe.  The Bureau is especially interested in assisting students who have been traditionally underrepresented in education abroad (including students with high financial need, diverse ethnic backgrounds, or disabilities, and those in fields such as engineering and the sciences). Within six months of returning from their international studies, recipients are required to complete a community outreach project that promotes international education and/or the Gilman International Scholarship.
