Award: Full tuition and fees plus a
stipend of approximately $28,000 a year, renewable for up to
three years.
Eligibility: Applicants must be US
citizens, have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and
planning to pursue a master's or doctoral degree in an approved
discipline. Applicants also cannot have taken more than two
courses in a graduate program (in which their GPA must be 3.3 or
higher), or have commitments (such as active military service, a
summer internship, or external employment) that would prevent
them from keeping a 12-month, full-time schedule.
When to Apply: Online applications
are usually due in early January.
The Department of Homeland Security
Graduate Fellowship is, as its title suggests, a grant sponsored
by the federal government for the purpose of encouraging
students to pursue security-based careers in science,
technology, engineering, or mathematics. Areas of approved study
include advanced data analysis and visualization, biological and
chemical threat assessment, border security, emergency
preparedness and response, food and agriculture security,
immigration studies, infrastructure protection, maritime and
port security, natural disasters and related geophysical
studies, transportation security, and similar fields.
In the summer between recipients' first and
second years, they are required to take part in a 10-week
internship at the Department of Homeland Security in Washington
DC or at another DHS-affiliated facility. Further, after the
completion of their degrees, recipients are required to work for
at least 12 months (in the 24 months after completion) at a job
at a DHS-approved STEM venue.
