Award: Full tuition and fees, and up
to $30,000 for living expenses (determined by financial need),
annually. The fellowship is renewable for up to four years.
Eligibility: Applicants must be US
citizens, nationals, or permanent residents,
and have completed no more than one year of graduate
study in a PhD (or terminal MFA) program in the arts,
humanities, or social sciences at an accredited US institution.
Those already holding MA may apply, although
a minimum of 60% of the fellowships
are reserved for those who have no graduate credit at the time
of application.
When to Apply:
Online applications are
usually due in the beginning of October.
Administered by the US Department of
Education, the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship is intended to assist
exceptional scholars obtain a terminal graduate degree (PhD or
MFA) in the arts, humanities or social sciences.
On average, twenty percent of the
fellowships are awarded in the social sciences, twenty percent
in the arts, and sixty percent in the humanities. Each
year, approximately 70 applicants are chosen to receive the
fellowship, which can be employed at nearly every college and
university in the United States. In order to be considered for
the fellowship, applicants must demonstrate a need for financial
assistance, as determined by the completion of the
Free Application for Federal Student
Aid (FAFSA).
