The Marshall Scholarship is designed to provide distinguished
American students of the arts, humanities, social sciences, and
science and technology with the opportunity to study in Great
Britain and gain a meaningful understanding of and appreciation
for contemporary British culture. It is named in honor of George
C. Marshall, the former Secretary of State who implemented the
Marshall Plan, which endeavored to rebuild and strengthen
Western Europe after World War II. Established as a gesture to
thank the United States for its efforts during the war and
post-war periods and strengthen the special relationship that
exists between the US and Britain, the scholarship is designed
to attract America's future leaders to further their education
at the British University of their choice. If an application is
accepted for endorsement by the home college, it is then
forwarded on to the regional review panel. All students chosen
as a finalist on the national level will then be asked to take
part in an interview (most likely in November, and in Atlanta).
