Scholarships
There are several funding sources for study abroad, among them: federal aid such as Pell Grant, subsidized loans and the Gillman scholarship; institutional aid such as APS, Honors and the International Education Scholarship; and aid from organizations such as Freeman Asia, Fulbright, ISEP, Australearn, etc.
Listed below are brief summaries of some scholarship and grant programs.
ETSU International Education Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to all eligible undergraduate and graduate students going to study abroad. Awards in the amount of $500 to $2500 are provided based on merit and need. For further information, please refer to the instructions below.

Fulbright Program The U.S. Student Program is a grant program designed
to give graduating seniors, recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master's
and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities
for personal development and international experience. Most grantees
plan their own programs. Projects may include university coursework,
independent library or field research, classes in a music conservatory
or art school, special projects in the social or life sciences, or
a combination.
German Chancellor Scholarship
Program
Ten German Chancellor Scholarships are awarded annually to highly
motivated individuals. The program sponsors individuals who demonstrate
the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and the United States
through their profession or studies. The scholarship provides
for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study,
or research. The monthly stipends range from Euro 2,000 to 3,500
and special allowances are available for accompanying family members,
travel expenses, and German language instruction.
Bowman Travel
Grant
Established in 1981, the Bowman Travel Grant is designed to encourage U.S.
undergraduates considering an educational experience in non-traditional
countries. Awards are issued as vouchers to Council Travel,
TO BE EXCHANGED for round-trip airline tickets to the program destination.
Freeman Asia
The primary goal of the Freeman-ASIA is to increase the number of
American undergraduates who study in East and South-East Asia,
by providing students with the information and financial assistance
they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences
with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, and to
spread understanding of Asia in their home communities. Awards are
made on a rolling basis.
Bridging
Scholarships for Study Abroad in Japan
The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project is accepting applications from American students participating in semester or year long study abroad programs in Japan in Fall 2008. The funders are offering 50 scholarships to assist students with the travel and living expenses while studying abroad in Japan. Students majoring in any
field of study are eligible to apply and Japanese language
study is not a prerequisite. The recipients will receive a stripend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic-year programs).The Bridging Schoalrships are offered twice a year. The deadline for Fall 2008 is April 7, 2008.
Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society
The Honor Society of PHI Kappa Phi offers an Undergraduate Internship
and Study Abroad Program that is open to qualified members of
the society and non-members in all fields of study. The Internship
Grant is designed to support an undergraduate recipient as he/she
seeks knowledge and experience in his/her academic field by working
outside the academic setting, while the Study Abroad Grant is designed
to provide support for an undergraduate recipient as he/she seeks
knowledge and experience through a Study Abroad Program.

National
Security Education Program (NSEP)
NSEP was designed to provide undergraduates with the resources
and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experience in countries
and area of the world critical to the future security of our nation. As
a student of another culture and language you will begin to acquire
the international competence you need to communicate effectively
across borders.
International Scholarship Program
The HACU-Laureate International Scholarship Program offers you an opportunity to study abroad at one of 15 different universities around the world. The scholarship program provides you with tuition assistance to encourage you to learn, live, and grow in another country. Information

The Council of American Ambassadors Fellowship Program Provides $5,000 individual awards to four undergraduate students to participate in a program that combines mentoring by former U. S. Ambassadors, practical training through internships at the Department of State and, in
conjunction with the with The Fund for American Studies, academic studies in international affairs at Georgetown University, and residential housing on campus. These Fellowships, which are open to undergraduate students who will be entering their senior year in the semester following
their internships, are available during summer sessions only.
The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship Program
College of William and Mary, will provide a $5,000 award for two U. S. college to work in the U. S. embassies in Paris and London and one U. S. college student to work in a component of the Office of the Secretary. The fellowships are available during summer sessions only. Applications of persons chosen by the Department of State for internships in London or Paris or in a
component of the office of the Secretary and who have authorized the Department to provide their information to other organizations, will be forwarded to The Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship Program for consideration.
Eligible candidates will be contacted with instructions on applying for a Harriman Fellowship. The Harriman Board has determined that only undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year and graduating seniors continuing their studies will be considered for the Fellowship.
