Yes, prospective students who plan to enroll in the English Language Center program at East Tennessee State University may be accepted conditionally to the university if all but the language proficiency requirements for admission are fulfilled. Successful completion of Level 112 of the English for Academic Purposes program will be sufficient evidence of language proficiency and can be used in lieu of the TOEFL. Please visit the ELS Center on campus website for more information.
Yes. There is an English Language Center on campus and students interested in enrolling in ESL courses should contact them directly. More information is available on their website.
In order for us to issue a Form I-20, which you will use to apply for the F-1 visa and gain admission to the United States, we will need to have original and current (no more than 6 months old) financial documentation verifying that you (or a sponsor willing to support you [also providing a written statement]) have sufficient funds available to support your studies. If your sponsor is a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, s/he would also be required to submit an Affidavit of Support (instructions) from USCIS. At this time (2015-2016 academic year), international undergraduate students are required to show a minimum of $41,757USD immediately available ( $40,091USD for graduate students), though there will undoubtedly be an increase in the next academic year. Please see the Fee Estimate and Bursar's Office Graduate Fees for more information.
For your information, even if you did receive financial assistance from ETSU, you would still have to provide original financial documentation as almost no scholarship covers all of the personal expenses and miscellaneous fees. As to how much the statement should show all depends on how much your scholarship (if you receive one) is worth. Please see International Student Scholarships for more information about financial assistance.
In order to issue the I-20, we must have evidence that these funds are immediately available to you. These funds can be a combination of sources, including scholarships, personal funds, or a sponsor’s funds (checking, savings, or money market accounts; no stocks, bonds, property, etc.). This is not a bill for ETSU ; rather, it is an estimate of expenses that students may incur that we must show to the US Department of State and Department of Homeland Security (formerly INS: Immigration & Naturalization Services). When we issue the Form I-20 for a prospective student, we are telling the US Government that we know that the student will not become a public charge or a financial burden to the US Government.

Yes, temporary housing may be arranged for international students who have already made on-campus housing applications. Cost varies from $10 to $30 per night, plus tax. Please contact the Housing Office for further information. Due to demand, temporary on-campus housing is generally not available. Arrangements should be made at a local hotel/motel prior to your arrival.
Unfortunately, we do not have an off-campus housing office, but the Adult Commuter and Transfer Services Office maintains a listing of off-campus housing. Students wishing to live off campus must procure housing themselves. We advise you to arrive at least 2 weeks before classes begin if planning to seek off-campus housing.
There is no guarantee that you can find on-campus work, especially during your first semester at ETSU. Many international students, however, secure positions as student workers within a semester of their enrollment.
