Thirty-two Rhodes Scholarships are
assigned annually to the U.S. States are grouped into
eight districts for the purpose of making these appointments. In
each state a Committee of Selection may nominate applicants
to appear before the District Committee, which then selects
not more than four nominees who will represent their states
as Rhodes Scholars at Oxford. No alternates are selected.
- The Rhodes Scholarship stipend consists of a direct payment to
the scholar's college of all tuition fees (such as matriculation,
tuition, laboratory fees, and certain other charges), plus a maintenance
allowance of £6,900 per year, which is paid directly to the
scholar. The sum provided should be sufficient to enable a
scholarto meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacation, but
those who can afford to supplement to a modest extent from their
own resources are advised to do so. Rhodes Trustees will assist
successful applicants with their traveling expenses to and from Oxford.
Married applicants should be aware that the scholarship stipend is
sufficient only for one person and that the Trust takes no financial
responsibility for the support of a scholar's spouse. Also, spouses
who are not British citizens will find it very difficult to obtain
permission to undertake paid work in England.
- Tenure of a Rhodes Scholarship is dependant upon maintenance by
the scholarof a standard of work and conduct, which, in the opinion
of the Trustees, justifies the Scholarship. Tenure of other
awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted
without prior consultation with the Warden of Rhodes House in Oxford.
The Rhodes, which may be held for a maximum of three years, is tenable
at the University of Oxford. Because most Scholars undertake
a line of study which enables them to take a degree in two years, appointments
are made for a minimum of two years. The Rhodes Trustees will
not consider granting a third year unless it can be shown that year
is eminently in the interest's of the scholar's immediate studies and
future career and that the work, conduct and general record have been
satisfactory.
- General Conditions
An applicant who has already graduated from college will be permitted
to apply either from the state in which they received a degree of from
the state in which they were legally resident on April 15 of the year
of the application. Such persons are not eligible to apply from
states to which they have recently moved and state committees are required
to verify legal residence. Simultaneous application to more than
one committee will result in immediate disqualification.
- At the time of applicant:
- Applicant must be a citizen of the US; pending application for
citizenship does not qualify a person to apply.
- An applicant must be have passed their 24th birthday by October
1st of the year of application.
- An applicant must have achieved academic standing sufficiently
advanced to assure completion of a Bachelor's Degree before October
of the year following application.
Committees of selection have to regard those qualities which Cecil
Rhodes expressly listed in order to define the type of scholarhe desired:
- proven intellectual achievement of high standard
- integrity of character
- interest in and respect of their fellow beings
- ability to lead
- energy to use their talents to the full
- physical vigor -- participation in varsity sports is not essential
if applicants can demonstrate in other ways the physical vigor which
will enable Rhodes Scholars to make an effective contribution to
the world around them
Financial need gives no special claim to a Rhodes Scholarship.
- Cecil Rhodes' will lays down that "no student shall be qualified
or disqualified for election to a Scholarship on account of race
or religious opinions."
Application should be made to the Secretary of the appropriate
State Committee of Selection as early as possible in October, in
no case will an application with a postmark later than October 11
be accepted.

for the application
