Mrs. Jean Copeland, President, called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m. She welcomed Mr. Harold Johnson, and thanked him for serving on the Board.
The minutes of the April 2001 Board meeting were approved as distributed.
President Copeland informed those present that a sympathy card was sent from ETSURA to the family of Dr. John Ephraim, and that the University sent flowers.
Mrs. Copeland called for committee reports.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Mrs. Rosemary Barson, Chair
Mrs. Barson reported that we now have 264 members, just one fewer than the number recorded at the end of 2000. All Board members were encouraged to contact retirees to invite them to join the Association.
TREASURER'S REPORT: Mrs. Betty Tester, Chair
Mrs. Tester distributed the financial report which shows an operating fund of $2,171.74, life membership account of $10,050.00, and total assets of $61,013.31.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Dr. Dorman Stout, Chair
Dr. Stout outlined the program and activities planned for the annual ETSURA spring picnic. Roger Bailey and Billy Walker will be the musical entertainment, and Dr. Stout asked them to include in their program the songs of the four branches of the military. Dr. Stout will also have some song lyrics printed for use in a "community sing." It was pointed out that our singing during todayís Board meeting was a "first" for ETSURA.
Larry Smith, University Photographer, will provide a picture board for display with photos from his long-kept files. These and others will be part of a continuous slide show at the October luncheon.
The Office of University Advancement is donating campaign caps.
Dr. Stout asked (a) Board members to stay around after the picnic to help clean up, (b) Harold Johnson and Betty Moore to act as greeters at the gate,
and (c) Board members to each make a personal contact of at least three people to invite them to attend.
SPECIAL ACTIVITIES SUBCOMMITTEE: Dr. William Pafford, Chair
Dr. Pafford reported that Dr. Willene Paxton has five tapes from her interview with the Dossett children, and will continue the interviews this summer. Dr. Pafford asked for volunteers to assist with typing once the interviews are finished. He also suggested that Fred Sauceman be contacted about possible publication of the completed project.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE: Dr. Harry Powell, Chair
Dr. Powell stated that each committee member has received a list of activities and an updated calling list, and is ready for the picnic calling.
LIAISON: Dr. William Fisher
Dr. Fisher briefly discussed information in materials he distributed, as follows:
Three handouts from the last Legislative breakfast on the Governorís Reading Plan, services covered by expanding the sales tax, and proposal concerning a state income tax,
TCRS COLA Increases table, effective July 1 of the past 12 years, and
Social Security COLA increases effective January 1 of each year. This table will be further updated for our next Board meeting.
Mrs. Copeland reminded the members that in May 2000, the Board had voted to dispense with the June meeting. Dr. Fisher moved that we eliminate the June meeting for 2001, Dr. Stout made a second, and the vote was unanimous to do so. The next meeting will be July 31, 2001.
Diana McClay reported that nine cell phones have been donated, and she will pass them on to Jay Allen for the next step in making them ready for use. She also played portions of a taped program from a Channel 11 interview which included Jean Copeland, Tommy Copeland, and Anne LeCroy.
Dr. Pafford has a web site address for buying prescription drugs from a pharmacy in Canada for about half the U.S. price. He will bring it to the next meeting for those who might want to utilize it. Dr. Pafford talked to a pharmacist in Canada, and was told that when the prescription is sent to them, they can send you forms for being reimbursed from your insurance company. If a group order were called in, the cost would be further reduced because of postage. He has not called BCBS to verify that they will accept this for reimbursement.
Mrs. Copeland asked anyone to call her if something needing discussion and/or action before the July 31 meeting comes up.
being no further business to come before the Board, Mrs. Copeland adjourned the
meeting at 4:15 p.m.
