Board Meeting Minutes

May 28, 2002

Board Members present: Jay L. Allen, W. A. Coleman, Jean Copeland, Joan Dressel, Bill Fisher, Barbara Humphrys, Bill Miller, Betty Moore, Dorman Stout, and Betty Tester. Others present: Jeff Anderson, Edith Keys, Diana McClay, and Keith Turkett.

Dr. Dorman Stout, President, called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

The minutes of the April 30, 2002 meeting were approved as distributed by a motion of Dr. Bill Fisher and a second by Ms. Joan Dressel.

President Stout called for committee reports.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Dr. Dorman Stout, Chair

Dr. Stout announced that all was going well with Mr. Harold Johnson, Secretary.  He hopes to be home by the annual picnic, June 13, 2002. 

Dr. Stout stated that Dr. Paxton inquired as to what constitutes a “teaser” regarding the “Tales of the University”?  A draft is expected by the annual meeting in October 2002.   The Board stated we should aim for three (3) pages but certainly no more than five (5).

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Dr. Barbara Humphrys, Chair

Dr. Humphrys reported that her committee was working diligently to enlist ten (10) more members which would bring the membership to a total of 300. 

FINANCE COMMITTEE: Ms. Betty Tester, Chair

Ms. Tester distributed the Financial Report which showed an Operating Fund of $2,573.31; Life Membership Account of $10,625; Scholarship Endowment Investment Account of $54,127.83; and Endowment Interest Income Account of $1,048.69.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Ms. Betty Moore, Chair

All is finalized for the annual picnic June 13, 2002, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.  Roger Bailey and Lannie Botkin will provide the entertainment and Dr. Wayne Andrews will be there to talk about the BucSports Center.  Dr. Stanton has not been definitely confirmed.  The poster board display will be set up.  Mrs. Moore suggested that if any board members would come early (around 10 a.m.) they could help Ms. McClay with the name tags, “favors,” etc.  There are several things one might do to help out.

For the annual meeting in October, the slide show presentation will not be a part of the program due to the photographer’s schedule conflict.  Ms. Mary Ward will make a presentation on the Health Information Orientation Program through the medical school (i.e., what is available, how to access it, etc.). 

COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE: Dr. Harry Powell, Chair

No report.

LIAISON COMMITTEE: Dr. Bill Fisher, Chair

No formal report.

            SERVICE COMMITTEE:  Dr. A. Keith Turkett

Dr. Turkett reported that his wife, Shirley Turkett, would chair the committee.  He solicited ideas from the group.  These were good starting points:

(1)               Find out what the university thinks they need in terms of what ETSURA may provide.

(2)               What can ETSURA provide and will the retirees be willing to help?

(3)               Establish rapport between the medical school and retirees.

OTHER BUSINESS:

Dr. Stout and members of the Board expressed continuing concerns over the health status and well-being of several of our members.  Please keep them in your thoughts.

Appreciation was expressed to Diana, Donna, Mr. Coleman, and Jeff Anderson for their continuous support and assistance to ETSURA.

The meeting adjourned approximately 4:10 p.m. with the announcement that there would be no formal board meeting in June since we have our annual picnic scheduled June 13.   The next board meeting will be July 30th.
