CPS & CAP Information
The Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) and Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) Certifications are nationally recognized standards for the professional secretary. The examinations are administered twice yearly by International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). The exams are open to any secretary who meets the eligibility requirements.

ETSU employees who work in a clerical-secretarial or clerical-management non-exempt position will be granted a nine percent (9%) increase in salary upon successful completion of the CPS or CAP exam. See ETSU PPP-41 CPS or CAP Examination.
Northeast State Technical Community College administers the CPS and CAP exams in the Wayne G. Basler Library on the main campus in May and November. If you have specific questions regarding testing, contact the Northeast State CPS Test Coordinator at 423-354-2422.
Review courses are offered online through the Tennessee Board of Regents Online Continuing Education (ROCE) program to aid in preparing for the certification exams. The CPS online review classes consist of Management, Office Systems and Technology, and Office Administration. The CAP exam includes the three CPS areas plus an Advanced Organizational Management exam. The review courses provide continuing education credit (CE) and follow the tuition rates set by the Tennessee Board of Regents ROCE program.

Video tape and printed study guides for the exams are available in the Sherrod Library. Subject areas include: accounting, business law, economics, office technology, organizational management, and others. Audio tapes are also available for checkout. Reference material may be available at the front desk or Media Center on the third floor.
