Board Members present: President Betty Tester, Pauline Cross, Bill Fisher, George Granger, Styron Harris, Kenneth Herd, Bill Miller, Willene Paxton, Chelsea Sharp, Dorman Stout, and Ed Williams. Also present were John Sanders and Diana McClay.
President Betty Tester called the meeting to order. Bill Fisher moved and it was seconded by Dorman Stout to approve the July minutes as distributed. Motion passed.
Committee Reports:
EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Betty Tester, Chair
Bill Coleman will be the staff representative on the Employees and Retirees Benefits Committee. Dr. Jerry Gehre is the faculty representative. These are three year appointments.
Bill Fisher moved and it was seconded by Bill Miller that George Granger be our Employee Giving Campaign Chair. Motion passed.
As to the Magical Night of Giving at the Mall it was noted that one cannot pick up the tickets until after our September Eat & Chat. Therefore it was decided that we would take orders for tickets at the Eat & Chat and we will place an order blank in the next newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Pauline Cross, Chair
Member stands at 322 (a record) and we expect a few more.
President Tester inquired of Kenneth as to the health of a faculty member in the medical school. It seems that there is also a second and a third person needing to be remembered in that school. Martha Bradley was also mentioned.
FINANCE COMMITTEE: Bill Miller, Chair
Bill noted that our total assets now exceed $100,000 for the first time.
Operating Fund Account .............................. $ 2,251.55
Life Membership Account ............................. 11,810.00
Scholarship Investment Account.................... 83,012.26
Endowment Interest Account.......................... 3,792.38
Total Assets................................................ $100,866.19
Bill noted that we needed a fund raiser in addition to the Magical Night of Giving. President Tester suggested that the Finance Committee serve as a fund raising committee.
Bill Miller pointed out that ETSU has supported the "Benefit for Life" program and it was mentioned in our latest newsletter; therefore, he saw no need for us to endorse the program further. This seemed to be the consensus of the board.
PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Dr. Kenneth Herd, Chair
Kenneth and Bill Fisher have been considering inviting one who has researched the Oil Crisis. Kenneth has also been researching local wind tunnels. John Sanders mentioned energy saving moves at ETSU. Ed Williams felt that our people want a report on what is happening at ETSU. This seemed to be the consensus of the board. The fossil project was also mentioned.
TALES OF THE UNIVERSITY: Dr. Chesla Sharp, Chair
Dr. Sharp noted that Bob Plummer needs help at Homecoming to gather tales from returning alumni.
COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE: Dr. Styron Harris, Chair
Dr. Harris has 15 callers and they are working on the next Eat & Chat and the annual meeting.
COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE: Dr. Dorman Stout, Chair
Dorman reported on three activities involving our membership:
1) Eight members helped the Women's Golf Team hold a hole-in-one contest.
2) Five helped man information booths on both Monday and Tuesday of Pride Week.
3) Seven took 10 "Pride Signs" to the mall and asked merchants to display them.
LIAISON COMMITTEE: Dr. William Fisher, Chair
Bill distributed a handout entitled" Medicare Drug Coverage 101.” He noted that Medicare Part D (effective January 1, 2006 for those who have signed up) is cost-effective if your prescription drugs cost $70 per month or more. We all need to read up on the new Part D in order to know just what to do.
All schools are invited to attend the First Annual State-Wide Higher Education and Retirees Group meeting to be held November 6 at Falls Creek Park.
ETSU has seen a 4-5% increase in her budget.
There being no further business, five or six moved that we adjourn and it was seconded by two or three others. Motion passed. The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at 3:30 p.m. in University Advancement’s conference room.
Respectfully submitted,
George Granger
